Charles Darwin Vergara and Frank Agostino
Charles Vergara, 15-year-old son of Tri-State veteran Mhet Vergara, went undefeated on the Tri-State Tour stop on Saturday, August 20. The $1,000-added C-D handicapped event drew 24 entrants to Gotham City Billiards in Brooklyn, NY.
Following victories over Mike Davie, Armando Baquero-Roche and Thomas Shuler, Vergara moved among the winners' side final four to challenge David Danchak for a chance at the hot seat. Frank Dagostino, in the meantime, squared off against Diana Rojas. Vergara downed Danchak 6-3, as Dagostino sent Rojas over 7-1. In their first of two, Vergara sent Dagostino to the semifinals and sat in the hot seat, awaiting his return.
Danchak moved over to face Alex Osipov, who'd defeated Joe Diamond and Kapriel Delimelkonoglu, both 6-3, to reach him. Rojas faced Thomas Shuler, who'd gotten by Doreen Verna 6-3, and Rick Shellhouse 6-4. It was Rojas and Osipov advancing to the quarterfinals; Rojas with a 7-4 victory over Shuler, and Osipov over Danchak 6-4.
Rojas then defeated Osipov in the quarterfinals 6-5, and ran into a determined Dagostino in the semifinals. He allowed her only two racks in a 7-2 victory that gave him a second shot against Vergara.
Dagostino and Vergara split the first two games of the true double elimination final set, before Dagostino chalked up three in a row for a 4-1 lead. Vergara closed the gap to within one at 4-3, but Dagostino came back to be up by two at 6-4. The two were knotted at 6-6, and traded racks to double hill. Vergara prevailed in rack 17 to complete his undefeated day.
