Mike Zuglan went undefeated at Classic Billiards in Rochester, NY to capture his first Joss NE 9-Ball Tour stop win of the 05/06 season.
The tournament started Sunday with four players left undefeated and Zuglan scored a 9-7 win over Hong Vongxay while Canadian Dan Doerner was sending Tom D'Alfonso to the one loss side with a 9-6 win. Doerner came out firing in the quarter final match and took an early 7-4 lead over Zuglan. From that point, Zuglan won five straght games to win the match 9-7.
On the one loss side local player Shane Winters was making his way through the one loss side with wins over Ron Casanzio, Hong Vongxay and then Tom D'Alfonso. Shane's run ended in his next match though, as Doerner scored a convincing 9-4 win in the semi-finals to set up the rematch between Doerner and Zuglan in the finals.
The finals started out the same way the previous match had, with Doerner taking an early 7-4 lead and Zuglan forging a comeback. Zuglan win four straight games to get to the hill at 8-7, but Doerner won the next to tie the score at 8-8. A costly error by Doerner in the final rack proved to be the difference as Zuglan went on to score the 9-8 win.
Zuglan earned $1300 for first, while Doerner settled for $960 in second place prize money. Shane Winters and Tom D'Alfonso filled out the top four spots.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Golden Cue Billiards in Albany, NY on April 22nd - 23rd for their next event.
