The teams of Brian Berry/Craig Koscielski and Rich Senna/Robert Avellar allowed their double-hill hot seat match result to stand as the winner-defining moment of the New England 9-Ball Series’ Scotch Doubles tournament this past weekend (Sun., March 24). The Berry/Koscielski team was awarded official winner status at the event which drew 24 teams to Run ‘Em Racks in Johnston, RI.
The Berry/Koscielski team was not scored upon until their winners’ side semifinal match against Felix Rivera and Jose Pardo. It was quite a different story for the Senna/Avellar squad which faced and won two double-hill matches to draw Shane Bernardo and Evan Moreau in their winners’ side semifinal.
Berry/Koscielski downed Rivera/Pardo 5-2, as Senna/Avelar were busy sending Bernardo/Moreau to the loss side 5-3. The ‘defining’ hot seat match went its double-hill way and for Berry/Koscielski, it proved to be their last match.
Rivera/Pardo and Bernardo/Moreau arrived on the loss side to do battle for advancement to the first money round; the quarterfinal. Bernardo/Moreau ran into a rematch versus the team they’d sent to the loss side in a double hill, second round match, Joe Rodrigues and Mike Uttley, which had chalked up two straight, loss-side shutouts to draw them the second time. The two teams had battled to double hill the first time and did it again with a different result, which advanced Rodrigues/Uttley to the quarterfinal.
Rivera/Pardo picked up the team of Jesus Garcia and Jose Fortis, which had also lost a winners’ side round to Bernardo/Moreau, right after that team had sent Rodrigues/Uttley over. Garcia/Fortis had given up only one rack in each of their two loss-side matches to reach Rivera/Pardo. Rivera/Pardo defeated Garcia Fortis 4-2 and joined Rodrigues/Uttley in the quarterfinal.
Rodrigues/Uttley eliminated Rivera/Pardo 4-2 and were themselves eliminated by Senna/Avelar 4-1 in the semifinal that followed. Negotiations got underway for the split of the top two prizes, with the undefeated Berry/Koscielski team picking up the official win.
Tour director Marc Dionne thanked the ownership and staff at Run ‘Em Racks for their hospitality, along with sponsors USAPL New England, BEF, FargoRate, Professor Q-Ball’s National Pool and 3-Cushion News, MJS Construction, OTLVISE, Outsville, Cue Pocket LLC, and Just the Tip Cue Repair and Custom Accessories.
