Jeannie Seaver has won just over half of the annual Tiger Pool Tour’s “Cues for the Cure” event, held to support the work of “Susan G. Komen” (formerly “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” and originally, “The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation”). The organization “focuses on patient navigation and advocacy, providing resources for breast cancer patients to understand the American medical system” and “(funds) research into the causes and treatment of breast cancer.” This past weekend (Sat., Oct. 14), at the 15th annual “Cues for the Cure,” Jeannie Seaver went undefeated to win it for the 8th time. The event drew 25 entrants to its regular host, Stephanie Mitchell’s Corner Pocket in Largo, FL.
In a “modified Elimination” format that allowed losers of the event’s two winners’ side semifinals to play in a single, loss-side match and either return to compete against the two women who would otherwise have played a hot seat match, or allow their loss-side competitors to advance for a second chance. The loss-side matches, in other words, concluded with the battles for 5th/6th place, while the winners of those two matches moved back to take on the last two women ‘standing’ on the winners’ side.
Seaver’s trip to the hot seat match (which didn’t happen) began with a bye and proceeded with victories over Dixie Sutton and Lisa Perez, both 7-2, to arrive at her winners’ side semifinal Krystalann Williams. The Pink Dagger (Sofia Mast) in the meantime, after her bye, defeated Michell Monk 7-2. They would meet again in the event semifinals. Mast advanced to shut out Jeannie Seaver’s sister, Vanessa and draw Kimberly Housman in the other winners’ side semifinal.
Jeannie Seaver shut Williams out to become one of the event semifinalists. Mast defeated Housman 7-3 to become another one.
On the loss side, Housman drew Monk, who’d followed her loss to Mast with four straight wins that included the elimination of Stephanie Mitchell 5-3, a double hill win over Kelly Coyle and two straight matches in which she gave up a total of just one rack, against Lisa Perez (1) and Shanelle Lorraine (0). Williams picked up Jessica Barnes, who’d lost a double-hill match against Housman in a winners’ side quarterfinal and on the loss side, downed Mimi McAndrews 5-2 and Vanessa Seaver 5-3.
Between them, Monk and Barnes gave up just a single rack in the two matches that made them the other two semifinalists. Monk shut out Housman, and Barnes gave up the one rack to Williams.
It was a rematch twixt Monk and the Dagger and they battled mightily for the right to be in the finals; a double-hill fight, won by Mast. The event was a WPBA Qualifier for the Dr. Pool Tour Championships in Wisconsin (Dec. 6-10) and it was Monk earned the qualifying spot. Jeannie defeated Barnes 7-3. Seaver completed her undefeated run to claim her 8th “Cues for the Cure” title with a 7-5 victory over Mast in the finals.
Tour director Mimi McAndrews thanked all of the players and the spectators who participated in the event’s raffle to benefit Susan G. Komen. Reportedly, a supporter named JD bought extra tickets for all of the players. McAndrews also thanked Stephanie Mitchell and her staff for hosting the event, title sponsor Tiger Products (Tony Kalamdaryan), Larry Wood (Boynton Billiards), Stitch It To Me (Nicolle Cuellar for doing the event t-shirts), Brutal Game Gear (Michell Monk), Dixie and Rick Sutton and Estates by Dixie (purse/toiletries donation), Andy Cloth, AZ Billiards, Susan G Komen, and a huge thanks to Josh Arnold for running a smooth tournament!
