After a wildly successful (for him) year at the tables in 2022 (his best recorded earnings year), Mac Harrell is getting off to a late start in 2023. In what was his first (recorded) cash finish in 2023, Harrell made it to the hot seat in this past weekend’s (Sat., April 22) stop on the PremierBilliards.com’s Q City 9-Ball Tour. He might have gone further had he and potential runner-up Jerry Cannon not opted out of a final, leaving Harrell as the official winner, allowing their first match to stand as the definitive ‘result’ of the tournament. The $250-added event drew 20 entrants to Mickey Milligan’s in New Bern, NC.
Harrell and Cannon met first and only the once in a winners’ side semifinal, as Robert Bridges and Pop Newitsky squared off in the other one. Harrell downed Cannon 8-2, while Bridges sent Pop west 5-1. Harrell then gave up only a single rack to Bridges, claiming the hot seat 8-1.
On the loss side, Cannon picked up Tracy Hardy, who’d defeated Donna Selman, double hill, and Tyler Bass 5-2. Pop Newitsky drew tour veteran DJ Brads, who’d recently eliminated Jacob Stein 7-1 and given up just a single rack to Jack Levangie; Levangie had previously defeated the former owner of Mickey Milligan’s, Gerry Shepherd.
Thanks to a forfeit by Newitsky, DJ Brads leapfrogged directly into the quarterfinals. He was joined by Cannon, who’d defeated Hardy 6-1.
Cannon and Brads fought to double hill before Cannon prevailed 6-6 (Brads racing to 7). Cannon then did a leap frog of his own over the semifinals. Robert Bridges had opted out due to lateness of the hour.
This left Harrell and Cannon, who mutually decided to forego the final. As occupant of the hot seat at the time, Harrell claimed title to the event.
Tour director Herman Parker thanked Kayla Corley (Gerry Shepherd’s daughter) and her staff for their hospitality, along with title sponsor PremierBilliards.com, BarPoolTables.net, Dirty South Grind Apparel Co., Realty One Group Results, Diamond Brat, AZBilliards.com, Federal Savings Bank Mortgage Division and TKO Custom Cues. The next stop on the Q City 9-Ball Tour, scheduled for this weekend (April 29-30), will be a $500-added event, hosted by Breaktime Billiards in Winston-Salem, NC.
