Mazin Shooni and 3 Cushion USA welcomed the Quechan Casino and Resort in Yuma Arizona to the world of 3 Cushion with their Triple Crown Event on June 25th – July 1st. Three events were held with a total of $10,000 in added money.
Raymundo Munoz was the first winner for the week, as he captured the Open Event title. Munoz advanced from round robin play with a 5-2 record, dropping matches to Guillermo Sosa 35-26 and Luis Aveiga 35-32. All three players would advance into single elimination play.
Munoz got right to business in the single elimination stage of the event, beating Sosa 35-25 in 21 innings and then beating Aveiga 35-32 in 27 innings.
In the final match, Munoz defeated Ivan Rosales 35-18 in 28 innings.
The 44 player handicapped event saw Hugo Patino advance from group F with a 6-1 record, only dropping his game against Mazin Shooni.
Patino then went through the sixteen player single elimination board with wins over Cesar Cardoza, Frank Torres and Shooni before defeating Harry Zamora 40-36 in the 27 inning final.
Finally, the fifteen team scotch doubles event was won by Mazin Shooni and Paul Guernsey. They came out of their group with a 2-1 record, losing to Ivan Rosales & George Couture.
They would avenge that loss in the first round of single elimination play with a 30-23 win over Rosales & Couture. They then went on to defeat Young Ha Choi & Mitch Arnold in a 30-29 thriller, followed up by a 30-22 win over John Park & John Guldali in the finals.
The Quechan Casino Triple Crown event was another great event put together by 3 Cushion USA. This organization, headed by former US National Champion Mazin Shooni was formed to promote the “gentleman’s game” of 3 Cushion, focusing on all skill levels and bringing excitement back to the sport of 3 Cushion. 3 Cushion USA’s next event will be the Bob Keller Open at Madison 3-Cushion Billiards Club in Madison, Wisconsin on September 14-17.
