Junior and Collegiate 9-ball Championships
University of Michigan/Ann Arbor to host next major BCA event
Colorado Springs, Colorado: The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) and Association of College Unions International (ACUI) will host the Junior & Collegiate 9-Ball Championships at the Michigan Union Billiards Room, on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, June 15-19. On the line for Juniors will be Boys and Girls age division titles, plus positions on the U.S. Team slated to compete at the WPA World Junior Championships in Klagenfurt, Austria, this September 20-25.
In the 16 weeks between January 15 and May 1, just under a hundred youngsters were named as champions of the 61 BCA events scheduled nationwide to qualify entrants into the event. With a few results still unreported, a total of 93 winners have earned entry into the large draw. Find qualifier results at BCA-Pool.com under the Play > Juniors > 9-Ball Qualifiers dropdown.
In addition, juniors were able to qualify from any official, designated league system this year, and players have also been drawn from ACS, APA, VNEA and BCA Pool leagues. The tournament field has increased from 150 last year to over 225 in 2005.
The BCA's Junior Billiards program participation has also increased dramatically, from 260 members in 2003, to 500+ in 2004 and topping out at 563 to date in 2005.
Finalists in each of the age and gender divisions (Boys and Girls 18 & under and 14 & under) will become eligible for the World Championship roster, and several of last year's top finishers will appear. In Boys 18 & under, defending champ John Morra will return, along with Tyler Strawn (2nd place) and Justin Bergman (3rd). For the Girls 18 & under, Anna Kostanian (2nd) and Juliette Houtz (3rd) will mount bids for top honors.
In Boys 14 & under, Iowa's Ryan Behnke promises to make a strong showing, after placing 14th in the Men's Open Singles division of the recent BCA National 8-Ball Championships in Las Vegas. [ see results at PlayBCA.com ]
The Junior & Collegiate 9-Ball Championships are sponsored by Olhausen Billiard Mfg. (official table), Centennial Cloth by Brunswick (official cloth), and Aramith (ball sponsor), along with a series of local supporters.
