ACS Celebrates Its Inaugural 2005 National Championships

The American CueSports Alliance has moved far in its first year, garnering over 18,000 members; sanctioning 151 leagues; recognizing eleven ACS state associations; certifying 109 referees; teaming up with its Canadian partner - Canadian Cue Sports Association; and evolving its board of directors through elections, affiliations and state representation to reflect a non-profit, sport-driven, member-directed structure that can eventually affiliate to the United States Olympic Committee. These first-year successes were crowned with the participation of over fifteen hundred individual participants to the ACS National 8-Ball Championships at the brand-new Reno Events Center in Reno, Nevada, April 30 - May 7.

With amateur competition in nineteen primary divisions of play over eight days and a total prize money purse of over $157,000, many players in all skill levels enjoyed successes in multi-divisions; but three players in particular gained "double gold" for the week - Illinois's Jesse Bowman (Men's Master 8-Ball Singles and Men's Master Teams [Brady's Bunch]), Washington's Becky Mowdy (Women's Master 8-Ball Singles and Women's Open Teams [She Hawks]) and Montana's Morgan Steinman (Women's 9-Ball Singles and Women's Open 8-Ball Singles).

The first weekend of play featured once-defeated open player, Morgan Steinman (Hamilton, MT), taking advantage of a 2-game spot each set to double-dip former national amateur 9-ball champion and master player, Tina Larsen (Palatine, IL), for the Women's 9-Ball Singles crown. In the Men's 9-Ball Singles finals, Eric Moore (Virginia Beach, VA) tacked on the first defeat to Adam Monture's record in set #1 - 5-3; but the Oshweken, ONT native recovered to take the title by a 5-2 margin in the deciding set. Houston, Texas's open players, Marcus Garza and Cynthia Chovanec, turned back the once-defeated pair of open player, Phillip Boyer (Eagle Lake,MN), and master player, Debbie Johnson (Maple Grove, MN), in two sets (1-4 and 3-2) for the Scotch Doubles 8-Ball title.

Action heated up on Monday morning with the start of 8-ball singles competition. By Wednesday's conclusion, once-defeated Jesse Bowman (E. Moline, IL) took a two-set win over Larry Wilson (Victoria, BC) for the Men's Master Singles title; undefeated Becky Mowdy (Longview, WA) took a setback in set one to finalist Andrea Wilson (Victoria, BC) 7-6, but recovered by a 7-1 margin in the penultimate set for 1st place in the Women's Master Singles division; Brent Forster (Houston, TX) eclipsed Derrick Claus (Oshweken, ON) 5-1 for the Men's Open Singles crown; Morgan Steinman easily claimed her second singles title of the week by outpointing Cheryl Pritchard (Chesapeake, VA) in the Women's Open Singles finals; Mickey Elefterion (Houston, TX) shaded Jerry Watts (Shelbyville, KY) 5-4 for the Men's Senior Singles laurels; and Rachelle Mayes (Houston, TX) needed only one set from Sherry Griffin (Bellevue, WA) to wrest the title in the Women's Senior Singles division.

The ACS developed a popular new "Standard" division - open to those players who had never cashed in previous national championships and to average-skilled players - at these Championships, and the turn-outs approached those of the Open divisions! Clare Marsh (Bellevue, NE) blanked Maggie Coey-Ooijevaar (Brampton, ON) 4-0 for the Women's Standard Singles title, and Darcy McGinley Jr. (Brantford, ON) took a comfortable 5-1 win over Erick Toledo-Torres (Shirley, NY) in the Men's Standard Singles finals.

In the second-chance "Sportsman" singles divisions for those entries placing out of the money in the primary competitions, Karen Lincoln (Shawnee, KS) outlasted Simone Huskey (Silvis, IL) to claim the women's bracket, while Steve Lenz (Orange, TX) outpaced fellow Texan Mike Corrigan (San Antonio) in the men's bracket finals.

The entire Reno Events Center was filled with team competition beginning on Wednesday, and many observations were made that the upper divisions were displaying some of the strongest skill witnessed in national league play in years. And with the "Standard" team levels added this year, there was opportunity for teams of all skill levels to succeed in Reno. "Brady's Bunch" from E. Moline, Illinois, was defeated early by Calgary, Alberta's "Team Karma" by a 12-13 margin, but the round robin format allowed ample recovery time, and the Illinois team claimed two close sets in the finals, races-to-13 (13-10 and 13-8) for the title. You could not have asked for two more evenly stacked teams in the Women's Masters Team division than the "Newtowne Naturals" of Chesapeake, Virginia and "Watch Gonna Do…" of Chicago, Illinois. In the preliminary rounds, the Virginia team took a 13-12 decision from the Midwest crew, but in the 2-out-of-3 set finals, "Watcha Gonna Do…" took both sets on the hill themselves - 13-12, 13-12 - for the crown!

The same could be said of the Men's Open Team division finalists, as "Lassiters #2" out of Clinton, Iowa, forced a deciding set against the undefeated "The Break Room" of Grants Pass, Oregon, in the double-elimination format, but fell short in the deciding set 12-13 to give "The Break Room" the well-earned title! More excitement continued in the Women's Open Team division, as "She Hawks" of Portland, Oregon area outpointed Calgary, Alberta's "Wooda, Shooda, Kooda" 10-9 to claim the hot seat, and weathered a similar assault again in the title match against the same Canadian team by the same margin, 10-9, for the national title!

The Men's Standard Team finals was all Calgary, Alberta, as "Easy Balls" won the A-side finals by virtue of a 13-7 score over "What A Combo", and was up to the task again in defeating "What A Combo" in the tourney finals 13-9 for all the marbles. Two local teams, both from the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, squared off as well in the finals of the Women's Standard Team division. "Nice Rack" clipped "Untouchables" 8-7 to remain undefeated, but "Untouchables" came back in the tourney finals to hand "Nice Rack" its first loss - 8-5, and force a deciding set. Another hill-hill finish came to be as "Nice Rack" scraped through 8-7 for the national laurels!

The ACS looks forward to hosting its members for the 2006 Nationals at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Valley tables June 10-17, immediately after the 2006 VNEA Championships!

In its first year, the American CueSports Alliance has depended upon hundreds of volunteers to administer its duties, and special thanks at the 2005 ACS Nationals are due to the staffs of the downtown Reno tri-properties (Silver Legacy Resort Casino, Circus, Circus and El Dorado); Steve Markwell and Joe Kelley of the Reno Events Center; Gary Benson and his staff at High Country Promotions - providers of the 110 Valley tables; Valley-Dynamo for their sponsorship of the Speed Pool competition - won by Dave Martin (Calgary, AB) and Tina Larsen (Palatine, IL) and conducted by Craig Arnold (Tacoma, WA); Tom and Marty Rossman - Artistic Pool directors - won by Mike Wasyliw (Ft. McMurray, AB) and Karen Lincoln (Shawnee, KS); mini-tournament coordinators WC Dixon, Sandy Chamberlain, Mike Wilson, Dean Bradley and Penny Lowry; Director of Referees Cecil Messer, event Head Referees Alan Barnes, Brad Felty, Jeff Phythian and their professional staffs; event sponsor Hawley's Billiardstore.com; rack sponsor Mueller Recreational Products; Frank's Center, who donated raffle In-Stroke cases and Bungee Jump Cues; official event clothier, Discount Custom Apparel; volunteer staffers Wenda Nichols, Linda Jury, Connie Lackey and the numerous supporting vendors who reported a successful event.
