2005 WPA World Pool Championship Dates and Venue Announced

MATCHROOM SPORT is pleased to announce that the 2005 WPA World Pool Championship will be taking place at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan.

The event breaks off on Saturday 2nd July and runs for nine consecutive days, concluding with the final which takes place on the evening of Sunday 10th July.

The prize-fund this year stands at US$350,000 and once again, 128 players from an estimated 40 countries will be going head-to-head for the top prize of $75,000.

Following on from the success of the World Pool Championship in Taipei last year, it was a natural choice to return to Taiwan in 2005.

Kaohsiung, the island’s second city and home to Taiwanese pool legends Fong-pang Chao and Ching-shun Yang, is this year’s host city.

This is thanks to television partners ESPN Star Sports who will be broadcasting the entire event live across Asia.

The tournament will also be aired live on Sky Sports in the UK as well as syndicated around the globe as 9 x 2 hour highlight programmes.

Once again, event promoters Matchroom Sport will be working with the Chinese Taipei Billiards Association and Mr Tu Sports to replicate the huge success of last year’s event.

Defending Champion Alex Pagulayan, the Canadian-based Filipino, will be back to defend his title and he will be joined by previous winners Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, America’s Earl Strickland, Mika Immonen (Finland), Fong-pang Chao of the host nation and the game’s biggest name, Efren Reyes of the Philippines.

Emphasizing the global nature of the sport, representatives of territories as diverse as Venezuela, Vietnam and Greece will all be competing as well as the stars from pool’s major league nations such as the USA, Germany, Philippines and Taiwan.

The 2005 World Pool Championship is sanctioned by the World Pool Association, the sport’s governing body, who administer pool across the world.

For players who have not made it through via international ranking lists, there will be a series of open qualifying events at pool club’s in Kaohsiung in the days leading up to the big July 2nd break-off.
